“He won’t see just Democrats,” the narrator reads. “Or Republicans. He’ll see Americans.”

A group of influential conservatives have released a television ad endorsing Joe Biden for president.

The Lincoln Project, a group of “Never Trump” Republicans including Steve Schmidt (a political strategist who previous worked for President George W. Bush and Sen. John McCain), Rick Wilson (author of Everything Trump Touches Dies), and George Conway (husband of White House advisor Kellyanne Conway), released the ad on Tuesday in key battleground media markets of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The ad “illustrates why Vice President Biden can reunite the country in a time of deep division, anger, and fear, and why he’s the right man to take on Donald Trump,” the group said in a release.

“He won’t see just Democrats,” the narrator reads. “Or Republicans. He’ll see Americans.”

In a statement, Jennifer Horn, co-founder of The Lincoln Project, said, “Donald Trump has left America in a state of danger, despair and economic depression, and the risks are too high to allow him another term. Vice President Biden is the antithesis of everything Donald Trump stands for, and his personal triumphs and tragedies have shaped him into the leader he is today. Joe Biden is the best choice to lead America through our worst crisis in a century.”

The Lincoln Project, named after President Abraham Lincoln, launched in late 2019, with the express aim of preventing Donald Trump from being re-elected. In a New York Times op-ed in December 2019, the group accused Trump of damaging the rule of law and the Constitution and lacking the moral compass and temperament to serve. They also criticized his Republican allies in the House and Senate for defending him and accused them of abandoning their constitutional duties.

“This president’s actions are possible only with the craven acquiescence of congressional Republicans,” the group wrote. “Congressional Republicans have embraced and copied Mr. Trump’s cruelty and defended and even adopted his corruption. Mr. Trump and his enablers have abandoned conservatism and longstanding Republican principles and replaced them with Trumpism, an empty faith led by a bogus prophet.”

The Lincoln Project has previously criticized Trump for his response to the coronavirus pandemic, releasing a video in March that juxtaposes Trump’s promises that his administration was “totally prepared” for the coronavirus and his false statements that “anybody who wants a test can get a test,” with clips of business closures and medical shortages.

The conservative group officially endorsed Biden last week in a Washington Post op-ed. “We’ve never backed a Democrat for president,” they wrote. “But Trump must be defeated.”
