Veterans shared on social media their stories about voting during elections while serving overseas.

Since the start of the pandemic, President Donald Trump has been attacking voting by mail with zero evidence to back up his claims. On July 30, a Navy vet called out Trump on Twitter in a now-viral tweet that is getting a lot of support from veterans and others on social media.

Roger Misso tweeted, “Hi @realDonaldTrump. Navy vet here. I voted by mail from an aircraft carrier in the middle of the Persian Gulf — twice. Were my shipmates & I engaging in ‘massive fraud’ then? Were you when you voted in Florida elections from The White House? Asking for a nation.”

Since April, Trump has tweeted 33 times about “mail-in fraud,” saying things such as “With Universal Mail-In Voting (not Absentee Voting, which is good), 2020 will be the most INACCURATE & FRAUDULENT Election in history. It will be a great embarrassment to the USA. Delay the Election until people can properly, securely, and safely vote??”

Today, before the president arrived in Florida, Trump responded to a new bill that passed in Nevada, which allows mail ballots to be sent to all voters amid the pandemic. He tweeted, “In an illegal late night coup, Nevada’s clubhouse Governor made it impossible for Republicans to win the state. Post Office could never handle the Traffic of Mail-In Votes without preparation. Using Covid to steal the state. See you in Court!”

Misso’s tweet garnered a significant response from vets on social media who shared their own experience with mail-in voting while on duty abroad.

A retired Navy veteran tweeted, “I voted from the Mediterranean Sea aboard the Independence in the mid 1980s. VF-32/Sixth Fleet.” Another tweeted, “Voting by mail works for our entire military and has for decades. Why isn’t it okay now? What changed? Ah…the GOP thinks they’re going to lose! Sorry Donny… that’s not how this works. #WeWillVote”

Another vet tweeted, “I voted by mail while on a guided missile cruiser in the South China Sea in the 1984 presidential election. Four years later I voted by mail from Cubi Pt., Philippines. I seriously doubt @realDonaldTrump has ever voted in person. #FakePresident.”

Several studies on voter fraud have been conducted and the results have all been clear: fraud claims are “almost nonexistent.”

In response to his viral tweet, Misso said, “The most humbling thing about this tweet are the hundreds of #veterans who have commented or RTed their stories about voting-by-mail overseas or on deployment. From Vietnam to Iraq to the depths of the sea, thank you all so much for your service & dedicated citizenship.”
