Missing the deadline doesn’t mean you can’t vote. Here’s what you need to register to vote in person in Michigan.
LANSING, MI—Michiganders have until Oct. 19 to register to vote online in order to take part in the November election.
As the deadline approaches, it’s important to remember that Michigan residents are still eligible to register to vote up to Election Day, but that registration must be done in person after Oct. 19.
Michigan election officials are working to ensure voters’ safety and security as they exercise their most basic American right in the midst of a global pandemic. Voters who are unable to register online are able to add their name to the voting roster at their local clerk’s office through Nov. 2 and at their assigned polling location on Election Day.
Michigan residents may register to vote and cast their ballots on the same day, if they wish.
Here’s what to expect when registering to vote in person:

At Your Clerk’s Office (Early Voting)
When arriving at your local clerk’s office, you will be asked to present proof of voter eligibility and proof of residency. To be eligible to register to vote in Michigan, you must be:
- A Michigan resident when you register and a resident of your city or township for at least 30 days on the day you vote
- A US citizen
- At least 18 years of age on the day you vote
- Not currently serving a sentence in jail or prison
Prospective registered voters must also show proof of Michigan residency by presenting a document that has your name and current address listed. Digital copies are acceptable. Examples include:
- Michigan driver’s license or state ID
- Current utility bill
- Bank statement
- Paycheck or government check
- Other government document

At Your Polling Place (Election Day)
Election inspectors posted to your local polling location are required to to collect the same information as local clerks when voters arrive to register. You must still show proof of eligibility and residency when registering to vote on Election Day.
Voters may register and cast their ballots on Election Day until 8 p.m. For polling locations with long lines and wait times, voters must be in line no later than 8 p.m.
