Ossoff is in a special election against incumbent Republican Sen. David Perdue that could determine if Democrats or Republicans control the US Senate.
Georgia is headed towards not one but two runoff elections this January, after Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff stopped Republican incumbent Sen. David Perdue from getting the 50% mark he needed to keep his seat in Congress.
The runoff election in Georgia has major implications, as control of the Senate rides on the winner of this contest and the race between Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler and Democratic candidate Rapheal Warnock.
Ossoff started his career as a national security aide to Georgia Rep. Hank Johnson, and in 2012 switched gears to pursue a career in investigative journalism. He worked with investigative television production company Insight TWI, and eventually rose to lead it as the company’s CEO.
Here’s a look at Ossoff’s position on several important issues facing Georgia:
Fighting Pervasive Racial Inequality
Issues of racial inequality and criminal justice reform were a top concern for Ossoff voters, according to exit poll data. Ossoff says racial injustice is still pervasive in the United States and that the criminal justice system mirrors those injustices.
“The deck is stacked against defendants who lack money, while those with wealth and connections often secure special treatment or outright impunity,” he wrote in a summary of his policy positions. “Race and class disparities in policing, prosecution, and sentencing must be ended nationwide.”
Increased Testing, Financial Support During Coronavirus Pandemic
Ossoff’s plans to address the coronavirus pandemic are another reason many voters flocked to support him, according to exit polls. Ossoff has called out the Trump administration’s response, or lack thereof, to the COVID-19 pandemic. He calls for increased testing, access to personal protective equipment, ICU capacity along with federal help.
He also wants a response that helps families and individuals that are facing dire financial situations. Ossoff called for improving the nation’s ability to track and contain the virus, so people can safely get back to work.
Expanding Medicare and Access to Affordable Health Care
“This pandemic should be a massive wake-up call for those who doubt the necessity of ensuring all Americans have health insurance. The link between health and wealth must be broken,” he wrote.
Ossoff supports expanding Medicare and access to affordable healthcare. He calls out his opponent Republican David Perdue and the GOP for working to limit access to healthcare even during the pandemic.
Transitioning to Clean Energy
Ossoff supports meeting energy needs without compromising the environment by transitioning to clean energy sources and reducing carbon emissions. He also supports rejoining the Paris Climate Accord and re-implementing the environmental protections that the Trump administration continually rolled back.
An Ally for LGBTQ Equality
A newly conservative-leaning Supreme Court could spell trouble for LGTBQ protections. Ossoff has pledged to defend marriage equality and the right for gay couples to adopt children. He also supports strengthening anti-bullying programs for LGTBQ young people and “I will defend and support the safety and human rights of transgender Americans.”
“The LGTBQ community will be able to count on me to stand with them as a strong and outspoken ally,” he wrote.
